Six of Pentacles: Card Meaning
Reading It Upright and Reversed

Six of Pentacles  ·  Minor Arcana · Pentacles · Six

The Six of Pentacles is the card of a merchant holding scales and handing coins with the other hand to one in need; upright, it speaks of a time when the accounts between giver and receiver balance evenly and help flows fairly, as much as needed, where it is truly needed.

A neatly dressed merchant stands on the road. With his right hand he drops coins into the open hand of one kneeling, and in his left he holds scales with a pan on each side. At his feet, two people hoping for help are bowed, and six pentacles float high in the sky.

What to notice in this picture is the scales more than the coins. It is not a scene of reaching out impulsively because his heart was moved, but of handing over after weighing whom to give how much. Thus the card puts fairness before kindness. Its message is that for sharing to continue long, the accounts must be straight.

If the Six of Pentacles appears, am I the one giving?

It depends on the cards that appear with it and the content of the question. If you have room to spare now and someone has come to you with a request, the one holding the scales is you. Conversely, if you met this card while waiting for help, you stand in the receiving place, and we read it as meaning that help really comes. But no one stays in one place long, and the roles of giving and receiving naturally switch with the times.

Six of Pentacles: Love

Upright

In love, it is a relationship where the feelings given and received are even. When one takes care, the other does too, and expressions of affection and time together pass back and forth about equally. Even if your circumstances differ, if each is gladly offering what they can, the card sees the two as fair.

Reversed

One keeps giving while the other only receives. The giver wants to win the other’s heart, while the receiver builds up guilt and keeps their distance instead. Rather than doing more, asking what the other needs and doing only that makes things between you far more comfortable.

Six of Pentacles: Money

Upright

In money, what is owed to you comes in on time. Money like subsidies, tax refunds and delayed trade payments gets settled. If your finances have become ample, first direct some of it to paying off debt. Money in this period grows when kept flowing rather than tied up.

Reversed

Emotions get mixed into money matters. You have not yet got back money you lent, or are putting off from day to day a debt you owe. Often the root of trouble is not setting a deadline rather than the amount. Just promising the amount and date in one sentence halves the burden on your heart.

Six of Pentacles: Work

Upright

In work, treatment in proportion to your effort comes back. Talk of a raise or rewards goes around, and colleagues who lent a hand receive their fair share too. You may take on a role leading juniors, so in this period, the more generously you share your know-how, the more you benefit.

Reversed

The work you do and the reward you get do not match. Work has grown but treatment stays the same, or good opportunities go only to a few. Venting complaints emotionally puts you at a disadvantage, so organize the work you actually accomplished over the last few months into a list, gather your grounds, and then bring it up.

Six of Pentacles Upright

Give and take · sharing · fair support

Upright, the flow runs without blockage. What is owed goes to the person who should receive it, and exactly that much goes out where it should be given. Overdue wages or settlement money may come in, and someone may lend a hand at just the moment it is needed. Whether giving or receiving, it is a time when you can hold your head high.

If you are on the receiving side, keep careful records of it. Only by remembering when, from whom and how much you received can you repay properly later. If you are the giver, first set the limit you can sustain. The reason coins always remain in the merchant’s hand is that to give steadily, your own household must be firm first.

Six of Pentacles Reversed

Lopsided giving · help with strings attached · debt

Reversed, the scales tilt to one side. Only the one who always pays pays, and only the one who receives keeps receiving. Help that was first appreciated becomes taken for granted before you know it, and the giver grows weary but cannot bring it up. What cracks the relationship is not the amount but exactly this tilt.

It may also appear as help that expects something in return. Cases where the one who lent money uses it as leverage to sway even decisions, or brings up a single favour at every chance, belong here. It can mean debt itself too, so check today whether both sides remember the agreed repayment time and amount differently.

Something to Try the Day This Card Appears

Today, recall separately the people who helped you and those you helped over the past six months, and write their names. If the two lists differ greatly in length, that may be why your heart has felt uneasy lately. Decide just one way today to add a person to the shorter list.
