How to open

The fortune cookie is a light note to start your day. It does not decide what will happen.

What Is a Fortune Cookie?

A fortune cookie is a thin, crisp cookie folded into a half-moon shape around a small strip of paper printed with a short message. Several stories are told about who first came up with the idea. The most widely known traces it back to paper-filled wafers baked in Japan that crossed the ocean and spread through tea houses and restaurants on the American West Coast, and there are even tales of shops arguing over whose city started it first. Wherever it began, the cookie has settled into a light-hearted habit today: after a meal, people crack one open and read the message aloud together, laughing along the way.

The fortune cookie at Quantaro is filled each day, one line at a time, by Kim Seojun. Kim Seojun tucks away notes across six categories, from Overall to Relationships, hoping that whoever opens this screen can start the day a little lighter. Each note carries a warm line along with one small action to try right away, so you can read it and move straight into your day. A grade, a lucky number, and a lucky color come folded in as well, so treat it as a small sign to open your day with.

Five Ways to Crack the Cookie

You can crack the cookie with whichever of five gestures feels right to you. Pick a gesture from the pill-shaped button beneath the cookie, then handle the cookie that way. Once it cracks and opens into two halves, the note unfolds into a card and today’s line types itself out letter by letter. Whichever gesture you used stays noted at the bottom of the result card.

  • Tap — Tap the cookie three times; each tap adds a crack, and the third one splits it open.
  • Press & hold — Hold the cookie down for 1.5 seconds; it opens the moment the gold ring around it completes a full circle.
  • Throw — Pinch the cookie and flick it quickly; it flies off and comes back cracked open. Release it too slowly and it just bounces back in place.
  • Shake — Shake your phone a few times to crack it open. The button only appears on phones with motion sensing, and it may ask for permission the first time.
  • Double tap — Tap the cookie twice quickly in a row to open it right away. On a computer, you can also crack it by selecting the cookie and pressing Enter.

Six Categories of Fortune

Before cracking the cookie, pick whichever category you are drawn to today. Each category holds over fifty notes that Kim Seojun has set aside separately, and any line you have received recently in that category stays out of rotation for a while before it can come up again.

  • Overall — Looks at the flow of your whole day. A good first pick when you are not sure where to start.
  • Love — Looks at where your heart is moving, whether with a partner, someone new, a crush, or time spent alone. It helps you find the first word to say.
  • Money — Looks at money coming in and going out. It suggests a small, doable step, like jotting down one line about what you spent.
  • Health — Looks at how your body and mind are doing. It carries light, easy care, like drinking a glass of water, taking a short walk, or going to bed early.
  • Study — Looks at studying, exams, and anything new you are learning. It helps you pick one unit or one page to focus on today.
  • Relationships — Looks at how things stand with friends, family, and coworkers. A note often suggests sending a quick hello to someone you are grateful for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the fortune cookie free?
Yes, it is free for members. Anyone can see the first screen, and once you log in, cracking the cookie gives you today’s line with no payment needed.
Does it change every day? Can I draw again?
A new line is drawn every time you crack the cookie, and “Draw again” lets you crack it as many times as you like, with no limit. The most recent twenty lines you have received stay out of rotation for a while, and the lucky number and color change with the date and with which cookie of the day it is.
Are there grades?
Yes, there are five grades. Great Luck, Small Luck, Even, Caution, and Great Caution are shown as five stars down to one. Even on a lower grade, a note points out what to watch for along with one small thing to try today.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes, it opens right in your phone’s browser. Shake only appears on phones with motion sensing, and on a computer you can crack it with your mouse or the Enter key.
Can I send it to a friend?
Yes. Tap “Gift to a friend” below the result card, and a link to an uncracked cookie is created for you to copy or send over KakaoTalk. When your friend logs in and cracks it themselves, your name appears above the card. The link opens only once and stays valid for seven days.
