The World: Card Meaning
Reading It Upright and Reversed

The World  ·  Major Arcana No. XXI

The World shows a figure dancing inside a laurel wreath, with faces placed in its four corners. Upright, it points to a long-held task finally coming to a clean close, followed by the stage you stand on growing a little larger.

In the middle of a long oval laurel wreath, a figure wrapped in cloth dances, holding a short rod in each hand. The top and bottom of the wreath are tied with red ribbons, and on clouds in the four corners of the card sit the faces of a person, an eagle, a lion and a bull.

The four faces placed in the corners mean that energies scattered to north, south, east and west have all gathered in one card. The central figure holding an identical rod in each hand shows a balance that leans to neither side. So this picture is read as a state where one full round fits together without a single piece missing.

I drew the World card, but nothing has been finished yet.

Completion does not only mean a result you can hold in your hands. What ripens unseen, such as insight gained by passing through a stage of life or relationships put in order, is also the completion this card means. If there is something you are holding onto now, it means it has entered its final stretch. Rather than starting something new, gather your energy into finishing what you hold.

The World: Love

Upright

The relationship between two people is tied off at one stage. Couples who have been together a long time look for a home to share or visit both families, giving the relationship a formal shape. If you are single, the leftover feelings from a past romance are cleanly settled, making room in your heart to welcome someone new.

Reversed

You have made up your mind, but the date just will not be set. Though you both want the same thing, months pass while you work out practical conditions, and the excitement cools. Do not wait for everything to fall into place; nail down one thing you can agree on right now. The rest will follow.

The World: Money

Upright

Long-running instalments and repayments come to an end. The remaining instalments reach zero, or a loan is paid off and the fixed cost that left every month shrinks. Rather than spending what you save, put it in a separate account, and it becomes the seed of your next goal.

Reversed

Settlement is unfinished, so you cannot plan your next step. It looks as though the whole ledger has stopped because of a balance still owed to you or a single unprocessed receipt. Even if the amount is small, the unsettled items must be closed first for the next calculation to roll.

The World: Work

Upright

You gain a record of completing a project you were responsible for. The project closes and a chance to present the results opens, and thanks to that experience, bigger work or offers from other departments come your way. If you were planning to move, now is the right time.

Reversed

The final report and handover drag on. You have already let go of the work, but paperwork holds you back so you cannot move on to the new job. Sort what remains into one-hour tasks and one-day tasks, and the blocked flow opens up.

The World Upright

Completion · fulfilment · a wider world

A long process finally takes shape. Like a degree project, packing for a move or signing a contract, the moment you put down the last signature, the matter leaves your responsibility. Parts that went off course along the way also find their place at this stage, so once it is all done, it looks almost the same as you first imagined.

The feeling of having grown is stronger than the feeling of having finished. Once you have the experience of seeing something through to the end, you gain an eye for sizing up the next task, and work you once would not have dared try comes within reach. Talk of moving your stage to another place or a new industry often appears with this card too.

The World Reversed

Slow completion · an unsatisfying ending · a delayed next step

The finish line is right in front of you, yet you have stopped with the last inch to go. You have written the body but cannot write the final paragraph of the conclusion, or you have packed every box but cannot fix the moving date. The less there is left, the more oddly you put it off; that is the feature of this side, so even if you give up a little perfection, putting the full stop first is the better deal.

Sometimes you finish but an uneasy feeling lingers. You got a result, but it is not the picture you wanted, so you keep glancing back. In the meantime, it is easy to let the moment to move on to the next round slip by. Move the parts you still feel attached to into a note to fix next time.

Something to Try the Day This Card Appears

Today, finish the most trivial of your unfinished tasks. Just find one item that takes less than ten minutes and strike a line through it. Only once the experience of seeing something through becomes second nature can you knock out big tasks the same way.
