A time when something that leaves a scar on the heart passes, like a farewell or a fight with raised voices. You may have heard that person’s true feelings, but the answer was quite different from what you hoped. Right now, rather than fretting to win them back, first give yourself room to quietly look back on what happened alone.
Three of Swords: Card Meaning
Reading It Upright and Reversed
Three of Swords · Minor Arcana · Swords · Three
The Three of Swords shows a red heart pierced by three blades under grey rain; it is a time when a wound to the heart already received and a truth that, however painful, had to be faced someday are revealed at once.
The picture has no people, and no scenery like houses or fields. A single bright red heart hangs in the air, pierced side by side by three blades, and behind it grey storm clouds and heavy rain fill everything. Among the 78 cards of the deck, few pictures hide their message so little.
Look at the number of blades. Rather than a single shock, it can be read as the news first heard, the words exchanged and the thoughts mulled over alone each passing through the heart one by one. Still, rain stops eventually. The picture quietly holds too that the storm clouds have not settled in place but are slowly drifting by.
If the Three of Swords appears, is a breakup decided?
It does not necessarily foretell a farewell. Its core is facing a painful truth, and while that truth sometimes ends a relationship, a hidden problem coming to light can also restore it. What matters in the end is what you choose after it is revealed. If you can tell each other where it hurt, this card becomes not a full stop but the starting point of setting things in order.
Three of Swords: Love
Moments of choking up grow rarer and ordinary days return. Hearing that person’s name no longer takes your breath away, and you want to scribble in a diary the words you never got to say. It could flow toward reunion, but more common is becoming able to bear being alone. Without fretting, time will lend a hand on its own.
Three of Swords: Money
Lost money has hardened beyond recovery. Money lent and never returned, costs from a contract that fell through and the like. The judgment to pour in more to make it up because it feels like a waste is the most dangerous right now. Confirm the exact loss and just block the gaps where more could leak; your share this time ends there.
Breathing holes slowly open in a money flow that was clogged. Part of an amount you could not collect comes back, a way to repay in installments appears, or expenses worth cutting begin to catch your eye. It will not be filled at once, but the trend is surely uphill. Sorting the repayment order in a memo makes it much faster.
Three of Swords: Work
You may face evaluations or criticism that scrape your pride. A carefully made plan may be rejected, or you may take on someone else’s mistake through a misunderstanding. Acknowledge the feeling of unfairness as it is, and separately pick out only the parts of the criticism that are actually right. Fixing just those parts keeps the same thing from repeating.
Tangled relationships and schedules gradually come loose. As apologies are exchanged or misunderstandings clear, the energy to take up piled-up work again returns. Still, body and mind are not fully healed, so do not run straight back at the old speed. Starting at about half your usual strength avoids trouble.

Three of Swords Upright
The painful event has already passed. It may have been a farewell with a lover, a cold remark a dear friend tossed carelessly, or the day you heard news you would rather not have known. If the card stands upright, it is not a time to cover it up pretending to be fine. Being honest with yourself that it hurts when it hurts: start from there.
A sword also has the power to cut open what is hidden, so when pain comes, truth comes hand in hand. A muddled relationship shows its true nature, and vague suspicion gets its seal of confirmation. So the present pain is the sting of a freshly cut place, and also the sting of something that had been forcibly stuck together being pulled apart.
Three of Swords Reversed
If it came out reversed, the blades lodged deep are being pulled out one by one. It does not mean fully healed, but the stage where you have passed the most painful crisis and a scab is beginning to form. The strangely refreshed feeling after a good cry, the hush that comes after pouring out what you long held in: this is that place.
On the other hand, it is also read as being unable to put the wound down. You replay the ended scene in your head over and over, stuck on that day. At such times, rather than struggling to forget, tell the whole thing from the first scene to the last in front of someone you trust. A story spoken aloud becomes much smaller.
Something to Try the Day This Card Appears
Today, write down once what happened, sticking only to facts. Write only what the other person did and how you felt in that moment, and leave out guesses like “why did they do that.” Once you remove the guesses, you will find that the share you actually have to carry is far lighter than you thought.
