A card for walking a blurry path

The Moon: Card Meaning
Reading It Upright and Reversed

The Moon  ·  Major Arcana No. XVIII

The Moon shows a path stretching between two towers, a dog and a wolf howling up at the moon, and a crayfish crawling out of a pond. Upright, it means a period when the facts are hazy but worry and imagination keep swelling.

In the sky of card 18 hangs a moon holding a face, and beneath it rays of light fall like drops of dew. Below, a dog and a wolf howl together at the moon, and in the pool at the very front a crayfish is crawling out.

The path that passes between the two towers winds on over the hills, but its end cannot be seen. Moonlight reveals shapes and at the same time blurs their outlines. Just as the tame dog and the forest wolf cry out alike, the picture shows a state where it is hard to tell how much is real and where what the mind has made begins.

When the Moon card appears, should I put my decision on hold for a while?

If it is a choice that is hard to undo, delaying a few days is better. This card means less that your judgement is clouded and more that a few puzzle pieces are still missing. For decisions that are hard to reverse, such as moving, contracts or breaking up, it is not too late to act after rechecking the facts. On the other hand, if it is something you can easily undo, it is fine to go ahead as planned.

The Moon: Love

Upright

In love, the other person’s heart is hard to read. Interpretations of the same single remark diverge, and unchecked guesses pile up layer on layer. Rather than deciding in silence, ask directly about one fact you are curious about. One question can make days of worry disappear.

Reversed

A tangle of misunderstanding comes undone. The reason contact stopped or their attitude changed is explained after the fact, and the relationship returns to its place. You may not like what comes out, but now you can choose holding solid information instead of guesses.

The Moon: Money

Upright

In money matters, it is easy to act without examining the terms to the end. Discrepancies arise in the fine print, such as hidden fees, penalty clauses or the real amount that lands in your hands. Read it once more before signing, and get things in writing rather than just hearing them, and disputes later will be fewer.

Reversed

Hidden numbers rise to the surface. Deductions you did not know about or a wrongly calculated bill are found, and the sorting begins. It is a good time to look again at long-neglected records, and objections or refund claims also go smoothly if you gather the paperwork now.

The Moon: Work

Upright

Work instructions are vague or the shared information is only half complete. If you push ahead on instinct, there is a good chance you will have to tear it all up and start again. The knack is to leave your questions in writing and get the answers in text, such as by email. If gossip is going round, it is safest to listen without passing it on.

Reversed

A hazy situation gets sorted out. Decisions on hold are announced, your scope becomes clear and the order of work is set. If you take this chance to turn the tasks you handled by feel into a manual, the same confusion will not repeat. It is an ideal period for documenting, too.

The Moon Upright

Anxiety · haziness · the unconscious

The upright Moon lights up a situation where imagination fills the gaps in information. You invent about ten reasons for a late reply, then settle on the worst scenario among them as fact. It is a period when things that might happen eat up most of the day more than real events do, so your judgement wavers more easily than usual.

It is also a period when the unconscious is busy. Dreams are unusually vivid, scenes you had completely forgotten suddenly return, and hard-to-explain hunches often prove right. At such times, put off major decisions and jot down what passes through your mind in a notebook. Looking back later, only the pieces worth keeping remain.

The Moon Reversed

The fog lifts · misunderstandings clear · true feelings revealed

Reversed, the thick fog lifts. Circumstances that frustrated you because you did not know them gain an explanation, and the real story comes out in relationships that went awry through misunderstanding. Mostly it turns out to be a blander tale than you imagined alone, so you deflate a little but feel much lighter. Keep a note of what you learn around this time.

It also reads as hidden feelings spilling outward. Emotions you pressed down hard burst out, revealing the real temperature between you. Opening up may start an argument, but facing a quarrel whose cause you know is better than staying in a discomfort you cannot explain. This is exactly where reconciling begins.

Something to Try the Day This Card Appears

Today, pick one guess in your head and check whether it is true. Asking the person directly or rereading an old conversation is enough. Once one fact becomes clear, the worries tangled around it unravel too. Thoughts that pass through your mind late at night are worth looking at once more the next morning with a clear head.
