Justice: Card Meaning
Reading It Upright and Reversed

Justice  ·  Major Arcana No. XI

Justice is the card of a figure seated facing straight ahead, holding a scale in one hand and a sword in the other. Upright, it means a time to set emotions aside, sort right from wrong by the facts, restore balance and take responsibility for the result.

The eleventh picture shows a figure in red seated on a stone chair between two pillars. In the left hand is a scale with both pans perfectly level, and in the right a straight sword with its point raised to the sky. The body faces forward, and the gaze looks straight through the person viewing the card.

The key is that the scale and the sword are held in the same person’s two hands. Weighing and cutting are not separate acts, so judging without moving is not the justice of this card. True to its link with Libra, its weight falls on leveling out what has tipped.

If the Justice card appears, will I win the dispute?

It is closer to meaning things are settled exactly as the facts stand than to who wins. The result leans toward the side with evidence and records, so if you are prepared, it is a reassuring card. If instead you are leaning on emotion and only blaming their attitude, this card points that out first. Gathering records with dates and amounts, rather than polishing what you will say, is the order of things now.

Justice: Love

Upright

A time to make the terms of the relationship clear. Put off questions on the table and settle them, such as how often to meet, how to handle money and how much distance to keep from each family. If one person has always been the one adjusting, balance is restored this time. Setting promises before feelings is what lasts.

Reversed

You are keeping score of what was given and received only in your head. The thought that you did more keeps building, but since you never say it, they have no idea. Only their faults may stand out clearly. Before listing past events one by one, start by saying one thing you want now.

Justice: Money

Upright

What came in and what went out match exactly. Tax filings, settlements and splitting each person’s share are wrapped up neatly, and money owed to you arrives on time. Recording amounts and deadlines clearly in a contract lets this card’s energy work fully.

Reversed

Money problems you put off raise their heads all at once. Overdue payments, late filings and money vaguely lent appear in front of you together. It is better to deal with the oldest first rather than the biggest. If you reach out first to work it out, it is usually at a level you can manage.

Justice: Work

Upright

Evaluations and reviews are carried out fairly. If your results are on record, they are reflected as they are in your score, and the boundaries of work whose ownership was unclear become clean. If you handle matters involving contracts or audits, following the principles is the fastest shortcut.

Reversed

What was done well and done wrong get tangled, and you end up treated unfairly. Your share of the work is not on record and passes as someone else’s credit, or you carry another person’s mistake. Rather than arguing emotionally, steadily gathering records with dates and details is how to turn this around.

Justice Upright

Balance · fairness · responsibility

Upright Justice tells you that what is unfolding now is the result of choices you made before. Neither the smooth matters nor the stuck ones happened by chance; trace them back and most start at a point you can probably guess. The moment you admit that, you also hold the handle that can change the board.

It is an especially welcome sign for anything that follows a set procedure, such as contracts, agreements or reviews. Prepare the documents carefully and proceed as things truly are, and the result comes your way. Between people, a conversation that redistributes a burden that has leaned to one side is essential. Even if it is awkward, putting the numbers and dates on the table first saves the relationship.

Justice Reversed

Bias · a postponed reckoning · self-justification

Reversed, the reckoning keeps being postponed. The problem has not gone away; the bill simply has not arrived yet, and the longer you delay, the bigger the price later. Unsettled money, apologies not yet made and conditions never raised keep piling up.

Lengthening excuses are another feature of this side. The more explanations you add, the more the facts are buried, and the other person remembers only your attitude, not the content. There is also a risk of reaching a conclusion after hearing only one side and treating someone unfairly. Right now, readily admitting the unconfirmed parts works better than adding more words.

Something to Try the Day This Card Appears

Today, take out one old reckoning and speak to the other person first. It can be money you lent or an apology you never made. The scale starts finding its level the moment one pan is touched. Even if you do not see it through, reaching out is enough to have done your part today.
