The Fool: Card Meaning
Reading It Upright and Reversed

The Fool  ·  Major Arcana No. 0

The Fool shows a young man at the edge of a cliff, head tilted back as he steps off. Upright, it means a clear start bound by no framework, and a spirit of adventure that sets out without calculating.

A young person in brightly patterned clothes walks on with his gaze on the sky. In one hand he holds a white rose, and a small bundle hangs from the end of a stick over his shoulder. But the very next footstep is the edge of a cliff. At his feet a white dog leaps up, and behind him rise snow-covered peaks.

The fact that a single bundle is all he carries is the key to this card. Only when you do not carry much do you worry less about losing it, and only then can you step off lightly. The number 0 also says he is not yet tied to any place. He looks precarious, but in truth he is possibility itself, able to bloom into any shape.

I drew the Fool card, and I am now at a crossroads with a major choice.

It is closer to a message to start on a smaller scale than to put the choice off. First look for a way to test it without staking everything. Take your first step within a range you can always turn back from, and you get only the benefits of this card, while the experience gained by trying it yourself makes your next judgement far lighter.

The Fool: Love

Upright

A period when you are drawn to the person themselves rather than their credentials. Your eye goes to someone completely unlike your usual type, or you meet an unexpected match on a blind date. Rather than hesitating, sending the first message yourself is the choice that suits this card.

Reversed

Feelings race ahead and things speed up. Before you know each other well, you already promise a future or tell your friends, and it becomes hard to manage. Weigh how much time you have spent together and how many deep conversations you have had, and if it falls short, fill that in first.

The Fool: Money

Upright

The door to a new way of earning opens. It suits starting something you have never done on a small scale, so test it lightly at a level where losing it would not hurt your daily life. If you think of it as investing in learning rather than investing a lump sum, there is little to lose.

Reversed

A habit of paying without weighing things up causes trouble. Agreements made without reading the terms to the end, and subscriptions that are a hassle to cancel, often attach themselves here. Just checking the total amount and the cancellation procedure before paying greatly reduces headaches later.

The Fool: Work

Upright

A time to open a new branch of your career. You move to a different role or take on unfamiliar work for the first time, and an attitude of honestly asking about what you do not know actually leaves a good impression. You absorb things quickly in this period, so when a new task comes, take it on first.

Reversed

You may find yourself taking on a role without preparation. Work started with the deadline and scope left blank swells along the way and becomes hard to handle. Agreeing on the deadline, the content of the work and its scope in writing before you begin, however briefly, prevents most of the confusion.

The Fool Upright

Beginnings · innocence · adventure

A time when nothing being settled actually feels freeing. You reach for the company you gave up on because you had nothing to put on your résumé, or for study you set aside, blaming your age. This card sides with those led by curiosity rather than those who have finished preparing, so if you spend a long time calculating this way and that, the glow of the opportunity fades.

It also carries the message that a path different from others is no problem. You skip a step or mix unfamiliar ingredients, and surprisingly it turns out well. Even if you hear worried words around you, they mostly just mean no one has tried it, not that there are grounds for failure.

The Fool Reversed

Recklessness · no preparation · a misstep

Full of excitement, but the preparation is missing. You sign without even flipping through the terms, or jump in without knowing the conditions and only learn the details later. The drive itself is good, but skipping a moment’s check can cost you months.

It also shows up as a pattern of tripping at the same stretch every time. If your start is always good but you get stuck at the second hurdle again and again, it is not a lack of passion; a basic mechanism for getting past that point is missing. Briefly record the scenes where you got stuck, and next time prepare for just that part first.

Something to Try the Day This Card Appears

Today, do not rush to a conclusion; run just one experiment. Cut something you have been interested in but kept putting off into small thirty-minute pieces and do only the first piece. Deciding whether to continue after trying is soon enough, and conclusions reached only in your head often miss the mark once you actually try.
