A romance where the attraction is hot but your energy drains the more you meet. Apart, you feel you cannot breathe, yet when you meet, days ending in arguments go round like a hamster wheel. It is less that one of you is bad and more that the habits you built together have hardened, so have a conversation that rewrites the rules between you from scratch.
The Devil: Card Meaning
Reading It Upright and Reversed
The Devil · Major Arcana No. XV
The Devil card shows a man and a woman with chains around their necks, drawn so that they could slip the loops off at any time. Upright, it points to habits or ties you want to drop yet cannot, and to the desire pulling from behind them.
At the centre of card 15, a figure with goat horns and bat wings sits on a square pedestal. An inverted five-pointed star appears above its brow, and with one hand raised, it lowers a torch held in the other. In front of the pedestal stand a naked man and woman with chains around their necks.
Small horns grow on their heads and tails at their backs. But the most interesting thing is the chain loops. They are drawn far looser than the necks, so simply lifting them would set the pair free. That is why the scene is read as holding both bondage and the possibility of release in one card.
If the Devil card appears, does it mean I should break up?
There is no need to take it as an order to part. This card suggests checking whether what holds the relationship together now is affection or familiarity and fear. Lower how often you get in touch for a few days and see whether your heart feels lighter or emptier, and you can tell the difference. Changing just the rules of the relationship often resolves things, so there is no need to rush to a conclusion.
The Devil: Love
A time to step back from a relationship that has bound you. Cut back contact a little and watch which way your heart leans, and the path appears. If you have made up your mind, reducing the chances to meet altogether works better than persuading with long talks. Lingering attachment feeds less on the dates that have passed than on the number of times you run into each other.
The Devil: Money
In your finances, look at items that stay the same no matter how much you repay. Card bills you are juggling, small payments you swipe out of habit and spending you keep up to save face are typical. What matters is less the size than the fact that it repeats automatically, so just freezing one card for a while snaps the loop.
A time when you find the hole in your wallet with your own hands. Read your statement from the first line down, and several payments pop up that you cannot remember making. Start fixing from there. Cancelling recurring payments one at a time suits you better than slashing all at once, and the difference shows in next month’s balance.
The Devil: Work
At work, you are stuck in place, your feet bound by conditions. Holding on in a position because of salary, rank or the few months left until a contract ends is typical. Write the weight of those conditions in numbers, and they may be lighter than you expected, or truly heavy. Either way, they become far easier to handle than a shapeless sense of being stifled.
Your reasons to keep putting up with it grow weaker. Practices you could just about bear suddenly feel suffocating, and vague thoughts of changing jobs turn into searching for openings. Even if you do not resign right away, get your work history in order. Simply knowing you have somewhere to go changes how you carry yourself at your current job.

The Devil Upright
The upright Devil asks one question. What exactly is holding you in place right now? A shopping app you open out of habit before bed, cigarettes you quit and then buy again outside a convenience store, a gathering you cannot skip even though it leaves you low: you already know the answer. Often you stay because that familiar comfort feels too precious to give up, even though you know better.
It is not a card that treats wanting things or wanting recognition as a sin in itself. Those desires are also the fuel that moves people. But if you met this card, it is time to check who holds the valve on that fuel. Write in two lines what you chose because you like it and what you cling to because you are anxious, and the boundary becomes clear.
The Devil Reversed
In the reversed Devil, the chains start to loosen. Something that always seemed natural suddenly feels awkward overnight, and the question of what you have been bending over backwards for raises its head. Such awareness tends to arrive quietly, without any dramatic trigger. Once you see it, it is hard to pretend you did not, and that very discomfort is the first button of freedom.
The path to breaking free is not always smooth. Holding out for three days, collapsing and pulling yourself together again often repeats. What helps here is not burning willpower but rearranging your surroundings. Put tempting things deep in a drawer, and move the time of the appointments you always kept together.
Something to Try the Day This Card Appears
Today, instead of cutting it off in one stroke, just delay it once. When you want to reach for it, wait ten minutes while drinking a glass of water or getting some air outside the front door. A vow to quit breaks easily, but delaying asks little of you, and as those ten minutes add up, the chain loosens.
